The Srebrenica Genocide: A Sacred Promise Broken

Bismillahir Rahmanir Rahim

The Unfinished Legacy: Why Bosnia & Herzegovina Still Needs Your Support:

Three decades after the Srebrenica genocide, the survivors and returnee communities who are the guardians of Bosnia’s future continue to face profound challenges. Their resilience is met with systemic hardship. These are not just numbers; they represent widows, orphans, and families your donation can directly support.

In July 1995, the world witnessed the worst atrocity on European soil since World War II when the United Nations-declared “Safe Area” of Srebrenica was violently overrun. On July 11, over 8,000 Bosnian Muslim men and boys were systematically murdered, while women and girls faced forced deportation and brutal violence. This campaign of ethnic cleansing, during which tens of thousands were tortured, killed, or detained, has been ruled a genocide by the International Court of Justice, a truth underscored by mass graves still being uncovered today.

The Guardians of Bosnia: A Story of Unyielding Hope

While the diaspora spread globally, a resilient heart remained in Bosnia. This appeal is dedicated to the courageous families who stayed or have returned to their ancestral lands, the guardians of Bosnian heritage.

Thirty years on, these communities live in the long shadow of genocide, often facing severe poverty. Widows, orphans, and returnees struggle without adequate schools, healthcare, or infrastructure. They are the living pulse of Bosnia, yet they remain its most vulnerable.

Ummati Relief Foundation: Your Trusted Partner in Bosnia

Ummati Relief Foundation operating from Bosnia House in Birmingham, serves as a vehicle for your compassion. We transform your charitable intentions into immediate, tangible aid. We stand shoulder-to-shoulder with the Bosnian community, ensuring your support directly empowers the resilient widows, orphans, and returnee families at the core of this renewal.

Key Statistics Highlighting the Ongoing Need:

Economic Hardship: Over 50% of returnee families in the Srebrenica region live below the poverty line, struggling to afford basic food and heating.

A Generation Shaped by Loss: It is estimated that over 25,000 women were widowed by the genocide, many of whom now lead households alone in economically devastated areas.

Youth & Education: In many returnee villages, schools and medical facilities were destroyed. Children often face long commutes to access education, a barrier to building a stable future.

Psychological Trauma: Studies indicate that over 70% of Srebrenica survivors show symptoms of chronic PTSD, with limited access to specialised mental healthcare in their communities.

A Dispersed Community: While over 1 million people were displaced during the war, only a fraction have been able to return to their pre-war homes, fighting complex legal and administrative battles.

The Search Continues: To this day, over 1,000 victims of the Srebrenica genocide remain missing, with mass graves still being discovered, prolonging the trauma for families without closure.

Your Zakat and Sadaqah empower us to deliver:

Emergency Relief: Providing food security and winter survival kits (including firewood) for families in impoverished regions.

Health & Wellbeing: Establishing medical support and trauma counselling for survivors rebuilding their lives.

Education & Infrastructure: Funding the construction and renovation of schools to
empower the next generation of Bosnians.
